Introduction to Trad Climbing Course is for anyone curious about placing gear, building anchors, and taking their climbing beyond the bolts – all in the warmth of the Anti-Atlas mountains in Morrocco. Learn the skills, soak in the culture, and climb in one of the most unique trad destinations on Earth.

Whether you dream of long adventurous routes or just want to understand the fundamentals of trad in a safe and inspiring setting, this trip is for you.

Requirements: This course is designed for those who have already done outdoor sport climbing and have an understanding of trad gear.

DAY BY DAY

Day 1 – Saturday 31 October
Travel Day from Marrakech or Agadir to Tafraout

Participants arrive early in Marrakech or Agadir (we recommend Agadir, due to shorter drive).

  • Pick up rental cars at the airport
  • Departure towards Tafraout around 13:00 (latest 15:00 recommended)
  • It’s a long drive in a new country, so take your time
  • Dinner on the road or upon arrival in Tafraout
  • Check-in at Hotel Dar Nour


Day 2 – Sunday 1 November
Course Opening & First Climbing Day

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Official course opening after breakfast
  • Presentation of participants and instructors
  • Course structure, safety framework, and expectations
  • Distribution and overview of shared equipment

We hike to a nearby sport climbing crag to get familiar with the granite, friction, and movement style of Tafraout. The focus is on mileage, movement, and adapting to the local rock.

Day 3 – Monday 2 November
Multi pitch sport

  • Leaving the ground, with focus on rope work and speed

Day 4 – Tuesday 3 November
Trad Gear & Anchors (Single Pitch lead)

This day focuses on building solid foundations for Level 2 trad climbing.

  • Placement of cams and nuts in local granite
  • Evaluating and improving placements
  • Building anchors using trad gear and natural protection
  • Single-pitch lead climbing


Day 5 – Wednesday 4 November
Multi-Pitch Trad

This day is dedicated to multi-pitch trad climbing with an emphasis on efficiency.

  • Multi-pitch trad routes
  • Placing solid protection in sequence
  • Building efficient and safe anchors

Day 6 – Thursday 5 November
Alpine Trad: The Grand Finale

We put all skills together on a longer alpine-style trad route in the Anti-Atlas Mountains.

  • Long alpine trad route
  • Route finding and decision-making
  • Team movement in bigger terrain
  • Applying all learned systems in a real mountain environment


Day 7 – Friday 6 November
Painted Rock & Social Climbing Day

You can’t visit Tafraout without climbing at the Painted Rocks. This is a more relaxed and social climbing day, focusing on enjoyment, mileage, and shared experiences.

  • Social climbing and shared leads
  • Optional skill repetition and personal goal

Day 8 – Saturday 7 November
Until Next Time

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Packing and departures
  • Informal course wrap-up and goodbyes

  • Personal climbing equipment
  • Climbing shoes
  • Knot tool
  • Mountain boots or approach shoes
  • Travel to / from Tafraout
  • Car rental to / from Tafraout and transport during the course (shared between participants, typically split between 4 persons)
  • Lunch (we buy and prepare simple local food and bread during the day)
  • Dinner at local restaurants (approx. 120 DKK per meal)
