Welcome to our glacier course at Demmevasshytta, which is designed for you who wish to go out and explore by themselves in a safe way! We will follow the Norwegian standar (NF Grunnkurs) and will be able to give you a certificate at the end of the course. 

Demmevasshytta is located at Hardangerjøkulen and has one of the country’s mos stunning locations right next to the Rembesdalsskåkji glacier on the southwestern part of Hardangerjøkulen. Rembesdalsskåkji is a very fractured glacier and has a lot of exciting blue ice, which we can train and explore on. The cabin is also one of the most inaccessible cabins in Norway which makes the hike out there extraordinarily beautiful.

Requirements: You have to be able to hike at least 15 km with a 20 kilo backpack. Most importantly is that you love being outdoors 🙂 

Day 1 – Sateday 5 Sep
Arrival & Preparation

  • Travel to Gol and meet at about 19:00
    Doors open at 17:00
  • Gear check, food review, and packing for the course
  • Evening briefing and preparation for the glacier hike

Day 2 – Sunday 6 Sep
Hike to Demmevasshytta & Glacier Introduction

  • After breakfast will we take the train from Gol to Finse
  • Hike approximately 20 km into Demmevasshytta
  • Cross two glacier arms along the way — first practical introduction to glacier crossing
  • Full day on the move (act 10–12 hours), so a good hiking fitness is required
  • Stunning alpine scenery sets the stage for the course


Day 3 – Monday 7 Sep
Glacier Skills & Navigation

  • Wake up to breathtaking glacier views
  • Focus on glacier navigation, rope techniques, and crampon skills
  • Hands-on learning with glacier equipment while moving on blue ice

Day 4 – Tuesday 8 Sep
Rope Team Routines & Crevasse Rescue Introduction

  • Practice safe movement in rope teams on more advanced ice
  • Learn and demonstrate techniques for rescuing a person fallen into a crevasse
  • Focus on teamwork, safety, and correct use of glacier equipment


Day 5 – Wedensday 9 sep
Full day out on the glaciser playing in the blue ice Crevasse fall.

Day 6 – Thursday 10 Sep
Application Day & Glacier Traverse

  • Use all skills learned during the week to plan the route back to Finsehytta
  • Cross Hardangerjøkulen glacier with instructors supporting your rope teams
  • Full day on the glacier (~10–12 hours), practicing navigation, rope management, and safety
  • We will travel back to Gol for a final celebration dinner

Day 7 – Friday 11 Sep
Course evaluation with a nice breakfast

  • We will have a nice breakfast at the mountain house at Golsfjellet
  • Evaluate the course and say goodbye


What’s Included

  • 7 days of instruction with experienced and certified instructors
  • Accommodation: 2 night at our mountain house at Golsfjellet + 4 nights at Demmevasshytta
  • Ropes and ice screws / snow anchors
    (Bring your own if you have any)

Not Included

  • Travel to and from Gol where the course start
  • Train to and from Finse
  • Personal glacier equipment (harness, carabiners, etc. We will send a packing list where all is mentioned)
  • Food during the course (we will buy shared provisions and bring freeze-dried meals)
  • Optional extra night at Finsehytta (Saturday to Sunday)
  • Any insurances


Equipment Rental (Optional)

  • Personal glacier equipment (full set): 500 DKK per course
  • Crampons & ice axe: 300 DKK per course
  • Mountaineering boots: 500 DKK per course
